You Gotta Start Somewhere
If you're new in the dropshipping arena, and you're wondering how to make money selling on eBay, it's understandable if you feel a little behind the curve wondering where to start. Hey, that's why you're here, right?
Why ARE you here? What made you stumble upon a site about eBay selling, a site made to teach people how to make money selling on eBay? It could be for a couple reasons...
Here, in the 4Newbies section, the ways to start making money on eBay will be broken down into simpler terms so that you can accomplish whatever goal you have in mind.
eBay: What Was, and What Is
eBay began as a way for people to sell their unwanted items on the internet. It was promoted like an internet garage sale; sell your junk, buy someone else's. In this era of eBay, people scrounged around their homes and looked for knicknacks to sell. There were also those (and still are) people who religiously go to garage sales to find things to sell on eBay. However, as eBay selling got bigger and bigger, and as the media began to fall in love with bizarre eBay sales, businesses began using eBay as a way of selling extra merchandise. They found it to be profitable, and more and more businesses got involved. Now, eBay is promoted differently, and it is simply known as "the world's largest marketplace." This is because businesspeople (including every day work at homers) now outnumber the people who use eBay to selling their "extras."
The era of using eBay as an internet garage sale is far over. Today, there are plenty of people who make a full time income using eBay. This is because there is guaranteed traffic to whatever you list. No matter what you put on eBay, somebody is going to look at it. And, unless you pick an absolutely saturated niche, somebody is going to buy what you have listed.
So what's the trick to making money on eBay? Sell as many things as possible as often as possible.
"But I'll run out of things to sell." Yes, this is true... unless you're not selling you OWN things.
"So, how do I sell other people's things for a profit?" And that's the million dollar question. Read on...
Dropshipping has been used by businesses for years. A company makes a sale and has their manufacturer or supplier ship directly to the customer. It saves time, inventory, and money. However, it wasn't until businesses got involved with eBay that dropshipping became big for the everyday work at homer (or future work at homer, like yourself). Today, most eBay Powersellers are dropshippers themselves. One of our staff members saw this post on a dropshipping forum:
"All those powersellers seem to do the same thing. They live at garage sales and thrift stores and package their own stuff up. I love doing the auction, not the hands on stuff. I could create auctions all day long but I detest storing, shipping or even shopping in the first place. Seems like my niche should be here somewhere. I devote enough time to doing nothing."
This person had it ALL WRONG! Making money on eBay is not about living at garage sales, packaging items, or shipping. That era of eBay is OVER! Powersellers never touch items; they dropship! And if you want to make money selling on eBay, you need to do the same thing.
"So, what exactly is dropshipping?"
Here are the basic steps of how the complete dropshipping process works:
By doing this, you never have to pay for the item with your own money, because the buyer pays your before you buy from the supplier. Therefore, you don't have to worry about losing money. You don't need to worry about holding inventory, because the supplier ships directly to the customer.
If you are able to find a product at a wholesale price and sell it at a $10 profit, it is easy to see how the profits can add up very quickly. While $10 seems like a small profit, imagine the possibilities of averaging a $10 profit and having 50-100 items listed on eBay at any given time. That is very feasable, and many people make full time incomes doing this.
There are countless ways to find products if you are willing to do a little research. You could, in theory, do all the leg work and go to garage sales and thrift stores, but you'll never, ever, reach your goals doing that. If you really want to have a business dropshipping, you need to be "buying low and selling high." Therefore, you need to find wholesale suppliers.
Wholesale suppliers are all over the internet, but they are a little difficult to find. A lot of people have been scammed by companies that claimed to be legitimate and were anything but. So, how do you get around this? The answer lies in dropship wholesale directories.
Before we touch on directories, why would any company offer goods at a wholesale price when they could sell them at a profit? The answer is in leverage. Companies know that they will make more money in the long run if they have many, many people (like you and me) selling their products for them (that is, dropshipping). Even if they are making less money on each sale, they will make more because of the volume that dropshippers bring. Therefore, both you and the wholesale company benefits.
Thankfully, dropship wholesale directories compile lists of wholesale suppliers to make it extremely easy for dropshippers to find products and make money with eBay. There are many directories out there, but some are better than others. We recommend reading our list of wholesale dropship companies before joining any.
What if you don't like eBay? What if you don't know how to use it and are unwilling to learn how to do so? Well, there is always the option of creating your own website and selling products from it. However, you then have to get people visiting to your site, pay for hosting, and manage the site (unless, of course, you go with the company on our "Product Reviews" page that eliminates all these costs). Even with these obstacles, it is still very possible to make a full time income dropshipping. Therefore, if you want to avoid using eBay, you can go the route of creating a web site. However, we prefer using eBay, because there is guaranteed traffic. In dropshipping, you want to be selling a large volume of goods at a constant rate. In other words, it is better to be making $10 one hundred times than it is to make $15 forty times.
Now that you've got a basic understand of how the business works, it is important to start testing the dropshipping waters. Join a dropship wholesale directory (most cost less than $50) and dropship one or two items. It is easy to do. This will help you get the feel for how the process works. Then you can gradually increase the number of items you dropship at one time.

However, you are fortunate in the fact that dropshipping requires almost zero dollars in startup costs. All it takes is some time, som learning, and some dedication.
